Can anyone tell me how to check a brushless motor without actually connecting it to an ESC and potentially blowing the ESC up?

LOL dont worry, its not the xnova!... My old TREX 700 motor took a bit of a beating and I dont really want to power it for fear of blowing the ESC....So I was wondering if there was a way to test it without connecting an ESC...

Spin the can by hand making sure the wires are not touching and feel for resistance when the motor tures over then connect the 3 motor wires together and turn the motor over again you should feel more resistance with the wires connected if it feels the same than you've probably got either a short or open circuit
