So is there a preference for helicopter blade type when flying for speed? I mean this is a specialized area so what brands are best?

you'll find most of the really fast guys use FAI blades (which is a style of blades not a brand) - they are much more heavily weighted towards the tips. This helps prevent agressive pitchups at high speed.

First time I put FAI type blades on my TDR I nearly shat myself as the roll rate becomes incredibly slow..
First roll I tried with them took forever and I thought i was going to deck it - luckily not..

      They were Radix blades.

SAB now make blackline speed blades

No doubt about Rail Blades... Speaking to a number of speed pilots, they all love them. No sudden pitching at high speed. I suppose the same applies to the tail blades as well?

The speed/F3C blades were just released last month, Nov 12. They're even more stable than the standard 716s ;)

Yes, more outward weight/inertia = more stability/slower response. I found this out on my own with a blade mod I made to my little 120SR.

If you want to fly fast nothing beats planks. Dynamic soaring sailplanes can reach speeds of over 800 km/h. Keep in mind they have no motors at all!
      http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_soaring

If you want to fly fast look for strong winds. T-Rex 700 can fly around 300 km/h but it needs strong wind.

Blades are much less important than strong wind.

Anyway speeds of helis are pathetic comparing to sailplanes.

      Just an example:

But records are measured in still air, so blades are very important. Also why compare apples with cucumbers, a great race push bike is cool, but because it doesn't go as fast as a Ferrari doesn't mean it pathetic. Compare apples with apples tiger

The latest dynamic soaring world speed record is 511mph.
It could pull out of a climb and overtake a Boeing 737 at cruise speed

Yes, DS planes are super fast... what does that have to do with helicopter blades? Not only that, but you're on a dedicated helicopter forum calling speed helis pathetic. o_O Come on, man. Stay on topic or make a new thread for your antics. (I wish heligods had a :face emoticon)

We can measure speed with GPS. Wind does not interfere with GPS measurements.

For me 280 vs 800 km/h looks like snail :)

My 800 reached 102 mph, 164 km/h. I did not push it hard. I am sure 200km/h for 800 is easy peasy.

I do no like to unscrew bolts with hammer. That is why I recommend sailplanes over helis for speeding.

Anyway I like to fly heli fast from time to time.

Considering $800 cost of Kontronik HV 200A ESC real speed helis are rediculously expensive.

Anyway turbines and Vario Model scale helis are also pricy.

I world use RJX 810mm asymmetrical blades for speeding. I have no idea how many hundreds kg of centrifugal force they can handle.

Just type in Google: "Setup tips for speed flying".

Regarding blades check Spinblades website. Looks like Dunkan Bossion likes them. I just received an email from them. They plan to introduce new models of blades next year. They also have semisymmetric blades.

Allow me to clarify two points.

The whole idea of speed flying in no wind is to measure the true airspeed of the flying object, not the ground speed.

When you measure speed with gps you will be measuring ground speed, which is airspeed plus wind speed.

So Therefore wind does interfere with GPS speed measurements.

Second, this is a rc helicopter forum, not a sailplane forum.

      So,

      Just type in Google: "Sailplane".

I must say i have never seen a sailplane move so fast - just Incredible. But with helis, a low flying speed past right next to you is like a missile! - the sound, the raw power - everything combined is just amazing to watch. I have seen Michael - aka faster do some amazing stuff with his helicopter.

Why HungryHungryHippos removed comment: "Congratulations, you have just shown the world why people make polish jokes." from his post?

I strongly support freedom of speech and honest opinions :) I am not angry.

I am not keen on speed helis for few reasons.

I do respect those who try. Let's talk real speeds... What about Mach 20!?:

Actually this one is "RC"! :)

That is truly amazing video! I enjoyed watching it. Ted series are excellent!... The exploding TDR is one of those moments where pushing the envelope sometimes does not pay off. At high speed there would not be much left of the TDR I am sure. I wonder how many parts were left. I also wonder what blades that particular helicopter was using?
