I would look into the Optiguards as well... better as you dont need to remember to turn them on, and they provide a higher voltage on failsafe

These provide voltage to provide a buffer for high current drain in hard maneuvers, not as a back up battery. If you lose your battery pack, and your have one of these you still go in. I have one (similar to) on my Goblin, and after I pull the RX pack, the servos work for about 3 seconds tops (not enough time to bring your bird down. Both of these solutions provide different functionality - and are both useful.

Interesting how they quote there is enough time to bring your bird down! If only 3 seconds youd better be quick! Maybe the spec is only valid if you use an mcpx...

I have scorpion backup guards on all of mine. I know you have to remember to turn them on, but that is not an issue for me....so far. lol

What I like about them is they will run my servos for about 12 minutes before the servos start jumping.

I also have my receiver voltage telemetry set to alert when the receiver voltage goes below 6V. So if the backup guard takes over, the telemetry alerts me and I know I`m on reserve power and need to land.

I use just a BEC and a prayer from the heligod father. The kontronics BEC has been good to me so far - even if i drain my battery and the motor starts to bog the BEC still works (x fingers)...

I`m using the BEC in the Hobbywing 160, and it has been working great. But backup power is cheap insurance. It`s not as critical on an electric, I guess....but I fly mainly nitro. Loose receiver power on one of those, and it`s a bad day. You loose all servo control and the engine keeps running...at full throttle. I do have throttle return springs on my nitro models as well, but I feel better knowing that the backup guard will keep me powered in the event of a power failure. :)

Basically if its more than a 500 class I run a backup... even if the bec itself doesnt go.. there's battery ejections, desoldering bullets, all sorts of strange and wonderful things can happen...

Doubling the BEC leads and adding 4400uF worth of capacitor seems to have helped my situation. Haven't had a brownout yet.
