My name's Gavin, I've been interested in RC helis for quite a while and my partner bought me an MCP-X a while back.

I visited the Melbourne Radio Controlled Helicopter Club a couple of weeks back and spoke to the very friendly and helpful guys down there. So I'm looking at getting more into flying them. Need to consider getting something a little larger now!

Welcome to HeliGods Gavin. The mCPx is a great flying little helicopter, and will serve you well during the learning process. Have fun and enjoy the forum :)

      Hi Gavin,

Not sure if I was there on the day you visited, but happy to put you on the club trainer which is a 600 size electric to give you a feel for the larger helis before you go out and buy one.

I'm usually there most weekends, just let me know when you might be likely to come down first and I'll make sure I have the club trainer charged and ready to fly.

      Best Regards,

      Matty

      Hi Matty,

I can't recall, I'm shocking with names (sorry if I did meet you!).

I'd love to try the 600 out and see what something that size is like to fly. I'll see what's going on and let you know when I can pop down.

I was thinking of something in the 450 size for myself to get going with (was thinking of a Mini Protos, but ARK RC told me that they're not going to bring any more kits in, so not sure now).

450's are great, but I'd personally recommend something a bit larger especially if you're thinking of joining a club and getting tuition (which will really help with the progression). The smaller helis for some can be a little flighty and take a little more time to master when trying to learn. Generally the larger the rotor size the more stable it tends to be especially when you're flying with a bit of wind. Have a look at a 500, 550 or even a 600 depending on your budget.

      Cheers,

      Matty

That's interesting advice, thanks Matty. I'll have to drop by again and talk some more about it all, I think.

What @Matty states is true. @Matty is a great pilot with lots of experience and knowledge and is well respected in the community. For me I found the smaller helis were easier to deal with because i was not a member of a club when i started and didnt know any better. I used a blade 400 and learned to do slow and very low (30cm?) figure 8s in my back yard which was no more than 4.5 meters square. I crashed a bit but I would not give up and nailed this in both directions. Then the MCPX was just released - I brought it and flew this little heli to death. It taught me so much. Then i progressed to bigger helis but still love my 450 protos because of its speed and durability and cost savings. However much comes down to the budget as @Matty said and joining a club is the BEST single thing you can do and can save you a fortune! Good luck @Lycean!

Awesome, thanks! Are there any brands that are particularly worth looking at in Aus?

Grab @smakmeharder , he will set you right. Heck, anyone down at MRCHC will do, they rock - wish I lived closer....Jeffery Blaney, "The Tyranny of Distance" (of course it has to be read with respect to being along way from a good Heli Pilot who can help you.
