I really like the 14sg better, myself.. You need to hold it in your hand and see how it feels..

 

Yep no doubt the feel will be the major deciding factor, but is the 14sG really worth $300 more?

 

You need to have a feel... just remember this only supports the fhss protocol...

14sg is awesome, buy right the first time

 

Until I get hold of each one side by side I will assume that because the 10J is a cheaper radio than the 14SG it will probably feel that way in the hands too. Discounting how it feels in your hands as that is different for every one, I'm still curious to see what people think of it's features (telemetry, voice alarms, functions) etc for the price.

Yes there is the fact that the 10J only supports fhss variants. In my opinion though for a new user to Futaba it is not really a problem because you would not already have a bunch of models that have fasst and fasstest receivers already installed that you want to bind to. If you did want to use those types of receivers becase you felt 'safer' with them then of course yo would not consider the 10J. There is nothing wrong with using fhss either, the 10J and the new receivers are full range and most people maybe except for the elite would probably never notice any difference in the transmission latency between the different RF systems. The fhss link is very strong and so long as you don't clog your bandwidth up with every telemetry function under the sun then there should be no problems at all with t-fhss. The 8J only uses fhss and there are plenty of happy users with that radio all over the place, also the s-fhss and t-fhss receivers are running SBUS2 now, so that will be great for connecting to the VBar, IKON etc.

At the moment it appears that the new t-fhss receivers won't work with the 14SG which is a little sad because these receivers will be relatively cheap and already have the telemetry built in to display the receiver pack voltage on the radio. It would be good to be able to use these receivers on the 14SG as it would negate the need to have to fork out heaps of coin for a fasstest receiver and the extra telemetry equipment just to get the receiver pack reading. I would guess though that the 14SG possibly already has the required componentry (amplifiers etc) to be able to receive the t-fhss telemetry signal and a basic firmware upgrade may be all that is needed to make the t-fhss receivers compatible.

I guess we'll see over the coming months what Futaba has in stall for us regarding all of this.

 

The FHSS prototcol will be rock solid for heli flyers as we all fly pretty close range really. The FASST really comes into it's own at greater distances or for bulky models where clear RF antenna view is an issue. So if you ever think about gliders or multi rotors then think about getting the 14SG. If telemetry isn't important to you look at the 8FG as the features are very similar to the 14SG.

I shouldn't say this but its a bit plasticky, much like the Hitec optic 6 . still its got all the features you need at a budget price

 

I always pick a radio based on these features:

reliability
gimbal Stick fell and how the radio feels in your hand.
features IE switch assignment
programability
battery Life

The 14SG works well. I have never had a dropout or model crash because of it. My last dx8 however caused me quite a bit of grief. For a hardcore heli flyer, I would go 14SG, its a very nice radio. But as @mr_squiggle states the 8fg would be suffice as well.
