While these multi-rotor craft have been intriguing, I haven't yet tried to get into it. There's just something about "traditional helicopter" type models that appeal to me more than the newer multi-rotor "drones" and so forth. I can understand the appeal of the newer models, but I can't seem to get past the "roboticness" of them.

 

I am the same @Beaver. I wanted to - i really did. Tried FPV which was a great experience. But i know i would get massive migraines from the fpv camera after extended use. I think for photography an and video an FPV is fantastic. But for me? A 3d Heli is a PURE flying machine. It lets you do practically anything if you are good enough. Once you get over the crash heligod hump and start to explore just what you can do its an amazing ride.

Also to fly 3d helis well takes a particular type of personality. If you have this personality it, it will hook you for along time and i think the RC heli neiche will allways be there - even with the drone saturation. But people who used to start out with helis will now start out with drones and think thats all there is to flying a heli - OR find out that there is so much more to a heli than a drone and giveup.

 

Everyone obviously has different background knowledge if any. The general control principles are similar between heli and multi-rotor (drones), so at some point, just like musical instruments and so many other things in life...... it can come down to a point to whether you either "have it", or you don't. I was fortunate that I happen to have been well-read in aircraft physics and had plenty of old-school (plank) Sim time before I ever started flying RC.

 

I got into FPV racing style for something to fly in winter around the house. ( flying from a wheelchair and M.S. make flying a no can do out side in temps below 50 F. and snow)

I fought it for a long time being a heli lover.

Broke down and tried FPV Racing style. (no pics and 5 mile flights for me, just hitting gates and short courses) and NO, it will never replace my heli's, but will be fun in winter and in summer at the field's track when the only place open for me to fly is the race quad area. (heli's have to share with fixed wing area) Some flying is better than no flying.

I went with what they call toaster style goggles because the Fat shark style made me go cross eyed at end of flight. The toasters don't do it.

 

Love the name.... "DOINKERS"... i have this image bouncing into a wall, the roof, my head. Actually a doinker could be a bit of fun youknow! what receivers do the little doinkers take? I have futaba...

 

Yes..... one of these Doinkers would be fun. I would especially like to try FPV, but at the moment, I would have problems seeing with the FPV goggles (far-sighted......, things start getting blurry less than an arms length away.)

 

I am the same @Beaver. I have good vision beyond that range though. really good. Its just when stuff is close it gets a bit blury for detail.

 

The Doinker is a full build. They are not pre build. You pick all your own electronics.
It's mainly a FPV indoor race quad.
It is like a big Inductrix. They got started by a gut 3D printing the frame and putting his own stuff on it. You can not buy them pre build or from a chain hobby shop. Just a few web sites have the frame. You can download the printer files from this web site.
